La Bayadere et photographie

la bayadere balletLast night I was on Planet Passion. Tantalised by the ecstasy grace and magnificence of the Paris Opera Ballet. La Bayadère, is one of its grandest and most spectacular stagings. Choreographed for the Paris Opera Ballet by Rudolf Nureyev who had been the company’s Artistic Director from 1983 to 1989.

So you get the picture. Thrilled by the combined hundreds of years of passion for what is for each of the dancers (and orchestra and staging and and and) their life and self expression. I was quietly thanking each of them for their sacrifice to their art, because for me, all of that commitment culminated last night in a breathtaking event.

Photography, the thrill of it, that self expression, the years of disappointment over unsatisfactory images and so on, is all forgotten when that one performance (the image produced) is viewed in real life rather than in my imagination.

So next time you find yourself annoyed at your performance, in the internal torment of struggle, remember that one day in the future someone will be in your audience and will be touched in a magical way. That person will be quietly thanking you for your endurance.

Am I ringing any bells here?

About the Author

My interest in photography goes back as far, if not further, than I can remember. My Grandfather had a thing called a box brownie and i remember being amazed at how it recorded history. I was given a 120 film camera when I was about 10 as evidenced by some black and white photos I recently found of my sister when she was 5 or so - she turned 40 in 2008. So from recording history, through the passage of an EOS 5 film into digital and moving into a desire to 'make images' rather than take photos, I find myself here. Photography. "For the thrill of it." Photography. "It's where life is happening." Photography. "When time stands still." Photography. "Maybe it's just about being there again."
