Kakadu bound we headed out of Darwin roughly south along the Stuart Highway we then turned onto the Arnhem Highway and then onto the Kakadu highway. After about 90 minutes of driving and a few pit stops, we turned onto Jim Jim road. Its about this time that I should point out that local knowledge is always very important and that I wish I had thought of that prior to turning onto Jim Jim Road.
We have hired a Getz. Now I do not want to bag the car, but lets be honest, a 4wd it isn’t. Anyway we were having a ball riping along the dirt road at one heck of a rate of knots, with dust flying and lots of laughs as two city boys would do. We had travelled about 60k or so when we noticed a wetland to our right, so we took a side goat track and settled in for a drink and an apple whilst watching the bird life in the wetlands. This wasnt a problem at all. We decided that since we still had about 30k to go before we got to Cooinda that we would head off. About 200 metres along we came to be a bit of an obstacle. Ok well a lot of an obstacle involving a river crossing and crocodiles. There was a tourist guide on the other side of the water way who said that we would make the first crossing but that we would sink and disappear at the second. So the question was, do we risk sinking in a crocodile infested river when we are just 30k to our destination or do we take a detour.
DETOUR…… we headed back up the dirt track for a short 50-60k then up to Jabiru then etc etc – you get the picture. Anyway some 230k later we arriving safely in Cooinda just in time for a 4.30pm cruise on the, yep, crocodile infested wetlands. See next article for a discussion on the splendour of the wetland.
