Hoya HD Filter
HOYA, the world renowned optical glass manufacturer, has once again pushed the boundaries of optical engineering and created an innovative high definition line of filters.
Hoya has managed to produce a 4x increase in the hardness of the glass itself through a chemical enhancement process. The glass is now classed as having 4 times the breaking strength in ANSI standardised testing (ANSI Z80.3 : 2001) where a steel balls of varying size and weight were dropped from a height of 50 inches onto the glass.
The second most notable feature of the new line of filters is the vast improvement made in their ability to repel liquids. The filters now have specialised coatings that are not just waterproof to repel water and oil spots, but also hardened to be scratch and stain resistant. Of course these coatings are from Hoya, so they also greatly reduce reflections off the surface of the glass allowing you to capture more light in your photos. These coatings make it much less likely for water to affect your photos if you’re shooting in the rain -- and also makes them much easier to clean.
The filters now come in their own 2-piece twist type filter case to protect them when not in use. Each filter case is the same size with separate inner raised lips to accommodate the various filter sizes available.
In line with Hoya’s PRO1D filter range -- the HD filters have an ultra thin frame, which means they’re perfect for wide-angle lenses which can suffer from vignetting when using regular thick frame filters.
Take a look at the video below to see just how much abuse the filters can really take.
Compare this against a non-HD coated filter:
If you’ve got a Canon L series lens -- or one of Nikon’s high end lenses, there really is no other filter in the market that offers the same combination of professional chararteristics. Looking for the best filter available? Grab a Hoya HD.
