Sony’s α550 Digital SLR is a 14.2 megapixel camera with a number of built-in features to guarantee sharp and perfectly exposed images.

The Sony Exmor CMOS image sensor is APS-C, or “crop-frame size”. Combined with the BIONZ processor, this sensor enables up to ISO 12,800 to capture low-light pictures with lower noise and reduced loss of picture detail.

Eye-Start Autofocus begins focusing as soon as the camera is raised to your eye, and the 9 point AF sensor with centre cross enables accurate focusing. And for optimised exposures, the camera has 6 creative style settings and 6 scene modes.

The camera will shoot up to 5 frames per second (with optical viewfinder) and at up to 4 frames per second with Quick Auto Focus Live View. It can save images in RAW or JPEG formats (separately or in tandem), with dual media slots files for storage on Memory Stick PRO Duo/Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC media cards.

Auto HDR is the α550’s built in implentation of High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography, which combines two exposures into one shot, for greater depth and definition. This boosts the α550’s ability to deal with severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes.

Dynamic Range Optimizer recovers detail in areas of shadow and improves results with backlit subjects. Normal DRO uses standard gamma curves to improve detail, while Advanced DRO adjusts dynamic range area-by-area for greater accuracy.

SteadyShot INSIDE is Sony’s image stabilisation technology to compensate for camera shake. SteadyShot INSIDE is built into the camera body.

In Quick Auto Focus Live View mode, you can extend the optical zoom of your lens with digital zoom. One touch zooms in at 1.4x while a second touch advances to 2x zoom. The system reproduces pixels on a 1:1 basis so there’s no degradation of picture.

The α550 comes with the following computer software: Image Data Converter SR, Image Data Lightbox SR, and Picture Motion Browser.

The on-screen Help Guide is a ready reference to the camera’s modes and settings and the Graphic Display clarifies the effects of, and relationship between, aperture and shutter speed.
The α550 has an HDMI output and will play back images in high definition when connected to a compatible HDTV. With compatible Sony BRAVIA HDTVs, the BRAVIA Sync system works lets you use the tv’s remote to control camera playback.

Manual Focus Check Live View allows for critical focus in macro and tripod shooting with the α500. While the 1x view shows 100% framing in the LCD, you can focus on fine detail viewing at 7x and 14x zoom.

Sony’s Face Detection technology further enhances the Live View system by recognising faces and applying proper white balance, focus, and exposure to produce better shots consistently.

Smile Shutter Technology works with Quick Auto Focus Live View to capture spontaneous moments by enabling the α500 to automatically trigger the shot when your subject smiles.

SONY’S α850 is the Alpha range’s full-frame (24 x 36mm) sensor DSLR camera. The size of this 24.6 Megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor, and its high pixel count, produces great image detail and wide dynamic range. The α850’s dual BIONZ image processors provide fast shooting response.

The camera features multiple levels of Dynamic Range Optimization built-in: Standard mode for improving shadow detail; Advanced Auto mode which offers five DRO correction levels; and DRO Advanced Bracketing, which captures three images at different dynamic range levels automatically.

The α850 has dual card slots for both CompactFlash and Memory Stick Duo Media (sold separately). The α850’s rugged die-cast magnesium alloy body is weather sealed and weighs 850 grams. You’ll get around 880 images from a fully charged InfoLITHIUM rechargeable lithium-ion battery (NP-FM500H).

Dual BIONZ image processors enable continuous shooting at speeds up to 3 frames per second.

A 3-inch glass pentaprism viewfinder offers 98% field coverage and magnification of 0.74x, showing an image nearer to its actual size.

The Intelligent Preview function allows you to see the effects of manual adjustments to exposure value, shutter speed, aperture, Dynamic Range Optimizer and White Balance before the shot is taken, so optimum settings.

You can view images in detail on the 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD display (921k pixels). With photo-quality resolution of 270ppi (pixels per inch) focus and exposure adjustments can require less time and more accuracy.

The α850’s shutter mechanism enables up to 1/8000 seconds shutter speeds and is proven for 100,000 cycle operation.

The α850 provides direct HDMI output for viewing in high definition on compatible HDTVs. Additionally, PhotoTV HD-capable BRAVIA HDTVs will automatically optimise display settings, such as sharpness, gradation, and colour.

The camera’s Anti-Dust Technology uses both a static-free anti-dust coating on the imager’s filter and anti-dust vibration that shakes the sensor to dislodge dust each time the camera is shut off.

In addition to full frame image capture, the α850 can also crop images to the APS-C size format, allowing the use of lenses designed specifically for APS-C sized image sensors.

(When a DT lens is mounted, images are automatically cropped to the APS-C size, regardless of the APS-C size capture setting. Using a DT lens is not guaranteed because the corners of the field are darkened and the camera does not meet the primary AE performance standard. )

AF Micro Adjustment enables fine focusing for various lenses. The α850 can store adjusted focus values for up to 30 lenses.

User-replaceable focusing screens for shooting specific subject types can be purchased as optional accessories.

Mirror Lockup Mode raises the main mirror before exposure to reduce vibration at shutter release, resulting in better performance during long exposure shots.

SONY’S EASY-TO-USE ALPHA α380, α330 and α230 CAMERAS make it a breeze to step up from point-and-shoot digital still cameras to digital SLRs.

The α380, α330 and α230 DSLR models feature a smart graphical user interface (GUI) with on-screen Help Guide built-in. The intuitive control layout on these three models make them easy to operate single-handed. In addition, they are smaller, lighter, easier to use, and offer innovative expansion options not found in other systems.

The 10.2 megapixel α230 is the lightest and most compact camera in Sony’s Alpha range, at 15.9 ounces. The 10.2 megapixel α330 and the 14.2 megapixel α380 cameras are also smaller and lighter than their predecessors (the A300 and A350, respectively).

And, built into each is Sony’s SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilisation, so that blur due to camera shake can be minimised with every α-mount lens.

Sony’s Quick Autofocus (AF) Live View technology is featured in both the α330 and the α380. This means you can use the camera’s LCD screen as well as the optical viewfinder to compose your photos. Quick AF Live View avoids the focus delay common to other live view system by using a dedicated image sensor.

The new cameras feature a 2.7-inch (diagonally) Clear Photo LCD screen that is easy to view, even in bright sunlight. The α380 and α330 models have tilt-screen LCDs so you can frame your subject despite angles that make sighting through the viewfinder all but impossible.

By combining Quick AF Live View and an adjustable LCD, you can frame the scene without holding the camera in front of your face. Parents, for example, can maintain eye-contact with their children to capture more natural expressions.

An HDMI terminal gives you the option to connect your camera to a compatible HDTV and play back your images in high definition quality (requires HDMI cable, sold separately). Additionally, BRAVIA Sync works with compatible Sony BRAVIA HDTVs to let you control camera playback using the tv’s remote (requires HDMI cable and BRAVIA Sync capable HDTV, sold separately).

The new cameras include dedicated slots for high-capacity Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo and SD/SDHC media (sold separately).

SONY HAS GONE FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH since it acquired Konica Minolta’s Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras division in 2006.

It was Minolta, in 1985, that developed the world’s first autofocus system with its A-type bayonet mount – known now as the α (Greek letter alpha) lens mount.

Sony’s DSLR camera system, introduced 5 June 2006, uses and expands upon Konica Minolta camera technologies, and is also called Alpha or α. Virtually all Minolta AF lenses are supported on Sony DSLRs, and many Sony lenses work on Minolta’s film and digital SLRs.

This pedigree is further consolidated by Sony’s work fabricating sensors for Nikon as well as the company’s sizeable ownership stake in Japanese lens manufacturer Tamron.

As befits this giant Japanese manufacturer of consumer products, Sony’s DSLR cameras are notable for their user-friendly handling, as well as their overall quality.
